Robot means a device which is a substitute of human. As we all know human body uses most developed engineering we can’t build a100% human substitute. Since you are a beginner let’s divide it to 3 categories to make it a bit easier.

                                                    

 

                                                    

This part includes all about the mechanical portions of building a Robot. Here is a brief  description  about wheels, gears, motors, servos, frames etc in this section.

 

                                                   

In this electronic section I am going to describe what are the basics of electronics, remotes, circuit design etc.

                                                   

                                

                                                    

This is the most important part of  robotics. You should have a basic knowledge of C programming to understand this. If you are building a manual wired robot then it’s not required but if you are building an automated robot it’s the most important part for your robot.

This is an automated robot which can detect obstacles on its way.

 here are some pictures of my robot .This robot is using a PIC16f876A  micro controller & few IR sensors. No remote is used too control this robot.

Most of you must have seen line following robots.well it's easier than the obstacle detecting robot. it uses simple  algorithm .here is a video of line following robot.  It 's  the same robot but i have modified it and reprogramed it.
